We’ve put together a list of unique internship programs in the Omaha area and what makes them so amazing! Internships are an awesome opportunity for you to give your potential career choice a “test run” to see if that is really the direction you want your career to go.
What kind of students do companies hire as interns?
The student selection criteria is very broad among our partner employers. Companies are looking for a variety of students from accountants, engineers, computer programmers, and economists to historians, social workers, psychologists, and emergency managers. Most companies are looking for undergraduate students at a junior or senior education level, but some, such as Northwestern Mutual and Valmont Industries hire students as young as sophomores!
For which positions do companies hire interns?
Our partner employers hire for a diverse selection of positions which can help you to have hands-on real life experience in these roles. Boys Town regularly hires interns for a Summer Youth Supervisor position. Streck recruits for BioEngineering, Research and Development, and Cell-Component Manufacturing paid internships. IPG hires IT interns, and on average, 25% of their interns are hired as full-time employees. YMCA of Greater Omaha hires interns from a variety of degree programs, such as Criminal Justice, Education, and Communication, for many different kinds of positions.
What makes an ideal candidate for these internship programs?
The top three pieces of advice recommended by employers for the interview are dress professionally, ask questions, and do research beforehand. Berkshire Hathaway recommends that students be outspoken and that they ask questions. BigInterview outlines some questions you can ask during the interview and how to research the company before your interview.
Generally speaking, students who succeed in their internships are those who can meet deadlines, work in teams, take initiative, have a strong work ethic, and are adaptable. Many employers look for students with a minimum GPA of 3.0, so if your cumulative GPA is at least 3.0, be sure to add it to your résumé for your internship positions.
Why might you want to intern at these companies?
Many of these internship programs have unique attributes, like travel opportunities, mentoring programs, and more! Kiewit provides paid travel and volunteer opportunities for their interns. Green Plains Inc. interns work on a group project that they present to the executive staff at the end of their internship and are also able to sit in on executive-level meetings everyday. Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co. offers a mentor program and paid housing to their interns. First National Bank provides professional development opportunities for their interns, including an etiquette lunch, intern innovation, and crucial conversation workshops; their interns are paid and often hired as full-time employees after the internship has ended.
