How to Choose a Major in Four Steps

Choosing your major is perhaps one of the most important decisions of your undergraduate career. While some people have known exactly what they want to study since they were five, others might need to do some exploring before finding something that they're really passionate about. If the latter sounds more like you, here are some tips on how to make that process a little easier.

Explore the Different Areas of Study

Take classes from different departments and keep an open mind. If there is an area of study that you're particularly keen on, then take a course from that department so that you have a brief idea as to how classes from that department might look like.

On the flip side, if there is an area of study that you don't know much about, but it sounds like something you would want to try out, take a class, and find out if it’s something you’re interested in!

Exploring courses in this way allows you to find your strengths and weakness, what you're passionate about, and what you're not. Lastly, from the classes that you performed well in, find out why you performed well in them or why you liked those classes and why you didn't like others.

Talk to Your Peers

Talking to other students about their experiences with choosing a major can greatly benefit you.

Their reasons behind choosing a particular major might give you some insight into your decision.

It could prove to be beneficial to talk to them about what choosing that major entails. Getting a student perspective would be so much more helpful when it comes to decisions like this. Talk to them about their experiences, all the different career outlooks, job and major expectations, how the classes are, etc.

Do Your Own Research

Once you’ve formed a basic idea as to what interests you, you might find it helpful to do some research of your own. Take some time to research potential majors, career opportunities, etc. and understand how your strengths and interests can be used to explore different areas of study.
