Do you feel like your job search process is like casting a fishing pole in the middle of the ocean, not even knowing for sure if the fish you’re searching for is out there, and waiting for a tug on your line? ACDC has compiled tips to kick-starting your job search process into a more proactive excursion.
Leverage LinkedIn and Handshake Connections
A great tool to take advantage of is the connections feature on LinkedIn and Handshake. On LinkedIn, go to UNO’s profile. On the left-hand side, click “Alumni”. Then you will see a page of filters where you can filter by degree, job title, location, and company to find UNO alumni that work in your desired field or with your desired company. With their profiles, you can message them and ask them about their position and even see if they know of any openings at their company. Similarly, on Handshake there is the “Students” tab. Once you click on it, you will see filters down the left-hand side. You can click on UNO students only, alumni, school years, majors, previous employers, and student organizations. Just like LinkedIn, you can then send a message to a student or alumni asking about their career or their company. This is a great way to be proactive in your search in a more personal method. Just make sure to send professional, clear, and concise messages!
Connect with Employers at Career Fairs
When attending Career Fairs, even if the company you were planning on speaking with doesn’t have the type of position you desire available (full-time, part-time, internship, volunteer), speak with them anyway and leave them a copy of your résumé. In this way, you get to interact with someone face-to-face from their organization and when a position at their company is fitting for you, they could recommend you for the job or recognize your name among the applicants. Either way, it could give you a better chance at opportunities with them in the future.
Take Advantage of ACDC’s Prototype
This past fall of 2019, ACDC was proud to present a new service, Prototype. Prototype is a program that will connect you with an industry professional that is intended to spark your curiosity and expand your horizon into possible career options. You will be matched with an industry or job function specialist in the Omaha-area and will meet-up on a date of your mutual choosing. After completing the application, there is a short overview meeting with an ACDC Career Advisor to go over expectations as well as to help them learn more about you. Prototype will help you to boost your confidence in communicating with professionals and help you to open doors in your career.
