According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), career readiness is defined as “the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace.” Being adequately prepared for your career sounds awesome, but what does that mean for you, and how do you achieve career readiness at UNO?
Career Readiness is broken into eight competencies: critical thinking and problem solving, oral and written communications, teamwork and collaboration, digital technology, leadership, professionalism and work ethic, career management, and global and intercultural fluency. These are the eight areas that employers deem important for college graduates to be proficient, and the statistics show that in most of these areas, college graduates are lacking. In fact, according to NACE’s study of 2017 college graduates and employers, only 33% of employers surveyed believed that graduates are proficient in leadership skills, and only 17.3% believed graduates are effectively managing their career.
